Local search is a mechanism for searching for improvements to the solution of a problem by making small changes to the current solution. This concept is a familiar one in everyday life, and is the normal technique used, for instance, to add a new appointment to an already cluttered schedule. We don't recreate our entire schedule from scratch: we make small changes so that the new appointment can be accommodated. This is the basic idea behind local search.
